First, I would like to thank Joanne, Bianca, Patsy and Juliet for their statements. I have such a deep appreciation for their years of friendship and there is nobody I would rather have stand with me today.
Second, I would like to thank my family, friends and neighbors in the community I have served my whole life for coming out to support me today, I am honored by the trust they are placing in me.
As we are all aware, this is a critical time for New York City, the borough of Queens, and the people of the 20th City Council District. It wasn’t so long ago that our borough was the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a year later we are still waiting for the resources we need to rebuild this community.
That is why today, I am proud to stand and offer my service as City Councilmember to the community that has been my home and the object of my life’s work for the last 40 years.
We are at a crossroads of crisis and potential. Thousands of our friends, neighbors, and family members have suffered at the hands of this virus. All you have to do is walk down Main Street to see the damage that has been done to our small businesses, the cultural backbone of this city. Numerous of vacant storefronts, thousands of unemployed Flushing residents, and still we are forgotten by City Hall.
Not only are we suffering economically, but the astonishing rise in Anti-Asian hate crimes has put the physical safety of our community at unacceptable risk. A government that fails to protect its citizens is one that is failing at its most basic and sacred duty.
There is no time for our next Councilmember to learn on the job. This district needs results, and it needs them now. That is why I am running for City Council. My decades of experience and service to this community have made me ready to lead on day one, and I have the track record to prove it.
As the first Asian woman elected to the New York State Legislature, I secured an 83% increase in funding for our district, while the rest of the state suffered 20% in cuts.
As the first female Asian Auxiliary NYPD officer in Queens, I know that it takes constant vigilance and the support of the entire community to stand up against hatred and intolerance.
As a single mother and survivor of domestic violence, I understand the injustices and the struggles that too many in our community must face every day without the help that they need. I say to them, I am here, I see you, and I will fight for you.
Once we have rebuilt the 20th district, we must ensure that we come back stronger than we were before.
That means making our city more affordable for its residents by building more middle-class and senior housing. We must expand social services and healthcare options for our seniors and reduce prescription drug prices.
It means increasing the reliability and accessibility of transportation in the district, with more local options, expanded rideshare services, and a busway designed with input from the community, not by politicians in Manhattan.
It means a first-quality education for every 20th District student. Our classrooms must be fully funded and given the modern technology required for a 21st century education. Classrooms must be smaller, and the student-to-teacher ratio must be lowered. We must retain the Standardized High School Admissions Test and increase preparatory resources so our students can remain competitive and are given the preparation they need to realize their academic potential.
We have a real opportunity to build our city back stronger than it was before, but that means electing leadership that is up to the task. This will not be easy. In fact, it will be incredibly hard. I stand here today to promise you that I am ready for the challenge, and to tell you that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Thank you for your support, for this opportunity, and for your trust in me.
Spring is here!
New York is back!
Ellen Young is the number 1!
Number 1 Ellen Young, she’s a fighter, she’s a fighter, she’ll fight hard！
I am so excited that this day is finally here! As many of you know, Ellen Young has dedicated her life to serving this community and the people of Queens. As a former Assembly-member and the first Asian American woman elected to the New York State Legislature, she has been a model public servant.
During her term to serve New York State Legislature, Ellen had fought and obtained 83% increased budgeting for her district while the total budget of New York State had been cut 20%. In addition, she had served as the Acting Speaker due to her outstanding leadership. She introducedmany meaningful bills and five bills passed in New York State Legislature, far more than most first term legislators.
Ellen serves the community non-stop after her term of Assembly member. Last year, Ellen raised tens of thousands of PPEs and donated to the community, she took care of food for the frail, sick and disabled elderly in the community. On April 11, 2020 the first testing station was set up due to her hard work to urge the establishment of the first free testing stationfor Covid-19 in New York City, greatly reducing the infection rate of the community!
Ellen knows that right now we need bold and decisive action in City Hall, and that we don’t have time for our next councilmember to learn on the job.
Ellen’s track record, quick-witted judgments, righteousness and legislative background, plus her positive attitude, persistence and enthusiasm made her the best candidate of 20th District.
That’s why we are so excited to have the friends and family of the Ellen Young Supporters Club here with us today as Ellen officially declares herself a candidate for the City Council in Queens District 20. All of us know that there is no person more qualified and more ready to fight for the resources this community needs right now.
Thank you for being here today, I can’t wait to have Ellen’s capable and compassionate leadership representing us in City Hall.
Chinese American Women's Business Association
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen,
my name is Patsy Fang Chen, I am the President of the Taiwan Center here in Flushing.
I have known Ellen Young for a long, long time. Ellen immigrated to this country from Taiwan when she was 25 and has since served as an excellent representative of and role model to our Community.
As the First Female Asian American New York State Assembly Member and having served the
Queens community with her best efforts. As a Taiwanese American and leader of Taiwan Center, we are very proud of her!
Long before that, Ellen has been caring for and serving her fellow Asian Americans in Queens,
as well as Taiwan Center’s members, with bills that greatly helped our members and the tens of
thousand of PPEs she brought us that saved lives in Queens during the past year.
I have been friends with Ellen for 30 years and during that time have been a witness to her
immense talent for organizational leadership and her administrative competence. I have seen
first-hand the results of the hundreds of thousand dollars she has raised for dozens of different community non-profits that have improved the lives of so many people.
Ellen visits the Taiwanese Senior Center monthly, attends our events and participates in our activities, we enjoy her brilliant singing and elegant dance, as well as her sense of humor, and most of all, her guidance and her mentorship.
With her warmest passion, experience and expertise, we support and wish Ellen the greatest
success in running to be the next City Council Member for the 20th District!
Patsy Fang Chen
Thank you everyone for this opportunity. My name is Bianca Wu and I sit on the board of the Flushing Business Improvement District. I have known Ellen Young, or Auntie Ellen as I like to call her, for a very long time. As a long-time friend of both myself and my parents, coming out to speak for her today was one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made.
Aside from her friendship, Ellen is a personal and professional inspiration for me. As I’m sure some of you already know, beyond being the first Asian woman elected to the New York State Legislature, she is also the first Asian woman elected to public office on the entire eastern seaboard.
This achievement is made all the more impressive by the fact that she did it as a single mother. Ellen Young is a trailblazer and has paved the way for so many of us who have followed since. Because of Ellen, young women across our city and especially in our community right here in Flushing can see a place for themselves and their dreams wherever they choose to look.
As our community’s former Assemblywoman, she has the experience and the leadership ability this city needs right now. Ellen Young is a fighter, and for years has brought her spirit and determination to work with her every single day in service to this community. That experience and decades-long record of service has brought her wisdom that no other candidate in this race can match.
I am proud to stand here today and voice my support for Auntie Ellen to once again lead this community as our representative in the 20th City Council District.
Bianca Wu, board member, Flushing Business Improvement District
Hello everyone. Thank you for being here. My name is Juliet Crupi. I have been a public school teacher for 12 years but I am here today to speak about my loving and kind auntie, Ellen. You have already heard from the heartfelt testimony from the wonderful speakers before me who spoke of Ellen's exceptional character, but I believe that I have a front-row seat to what makes Ellen so special for my life as well as our family.
Ellen's story - our family story - is one of a beautiful marriage of two cultures that are undeniably different but at times indistinguishable from one another. It's a blending of culture that is a true New York story.
My brother is married to Ellen's daughter, Coral, who he met over thirty years ago in elementary school. In the 1980's, Ellen approached the elementary school's administration wanting to share her family's cultural heritage with the students. Later on, in the 1990's Ellen advocated for more high schools to offer Chinese language classes. In 2011, when I was teaching in the evenings at a school in Chinatown, my school administrators knew who Ellen was as she has been involved in serving communities for decades.
Ellen moved here at the age of 25 from Taiwan and like so many other immigrants before and since, she has strengthened this city and its people with the heritage she brought with her.
Within our own family, Ellen brings everyone together with her vibrant spirit. She has shared stories of her culture including her father's struggle leaving China for Taiwan along with her story of moving from Taiwan to the U.S. She also shows us the beautiful poetry of her native language.
During this last Lunar New Year, Ellen gave us a personalized Chinese 'chop' or stamp with my name and a beautiful poem carved into it. Not only that, but she translated the poem's meaning for us, word for word, so we could enjoy the beauty of her culture and understand her love for us. As a teacher myself, I can tell you that teaching and mentorship is in Ellen's blood. She has taught my family the beautiful possibilities of a union between East and West, as she has taught so many others throughout her career.
Ellen's cross-cultural perspective will be invaluable to a district and borough as diverse and as beautiful as the 20th City Council district in Queens. I cannot think of a better auntie for myself and I cannot think of anyone who would serve this community better as its next representative in City Hall.
Let us vote for Ellen! Thank you.
