Yasmin Strevens-Chen Speaking:

I was born into a musical family and showed an interest in music from an early age. Aged 3, I began learning violin with my mother, a professional violinist and violin teacher. At 4, I started learning piano, and at 7, the clarinet.

Aged 7, I was accepted into the National Children’s Orchestra, where on numerous occasions, I was awarded the Leverhulme Scholarship for Musical Excellence. I was leader of the NCO for 4 years, and was privileged to perform in many of the UK’s top concert halls, including Symphony Hall, in Birmingham.

Aged 8, I was accepted into the Royal College of Music Junior Department, where I studied violin with Rodney Friend and Esta Katona, also studying piano and clarinet, whilst I was there. At 9, I was awarded a full government scholarship to study at the Purcell School of Music, where I studied violin with Remus Azoitei. I also studied piano and clarinet there.

I’ve performed in recitals in many concert venues, including St. Mary’s Church and St. Luke’s Church in Watford, St. Peter’s Church in St. Albans, an invitation recital for the Berkhamsted Music Society, and Conway Hall, London. As a soloist with orchestras, I have performed the Bruch violin Concerto with Watford Philharmonic, in Watford Colosseum,, Saint-Saens ‘Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso’ with Watford Symphony Orchestra, and the main theme from ‘Schindler’s List’ with Watford School of Music Youth Orchestra, once at home in Watford, and then at the national finals of Music For Youth, in Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

I have attended masterclasses in Sinaia Romania, and won many prizes at music festivals. I have also played with impulse groups which have travelled across the uk and Europe travelling to different primary schools to help teach and play music with them, I have also done quite a few charity events.

Music is my life, but I have a particular passion for orchestral playing and for chamber music. As a chamber player, I have performed with school ensembles as leader, as well as leading the Watford School of Music Senior Quartet, at home and in Manchester and London, at the Wigmore Hall’s National Young Quartet Course, funded by Wigmore Hall. As an orchestral player, as mentioned before, I was the leader of NCO for 4 years. Aged 14, I gained a place in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, where I have been lucky enough to play in some notable concerts, including the BBC Proms, at the Royal Albert Hall. At 14, I was appointed leader of Watford School of Music’s Youth Orchestra (the youngest leader in its 60 year history) and led it, for its performance at the MFY Proms, in November 2016. I have been privileged to co-lead the NYO, lead for its young composer showcases and for its ‘Inspire’ days. I was also interviewed on BBC4 for the recent NYO Prom. Quite scary, but fun too!

Currently, I am a 2nd year student at the Royal Academy of Music London which is one of the best music conservatoires in the world, studying music in violin performance for my Bachelor’s degree and then eventually my Master’s degree.

As well as being a passionate musician, I swim at a county level, having done a lot of county swimming competitions as well, I am also a very confident skier and snowboarder, I also ice skate and play other sports. I enjoy listening to many different genres of music, reading lots of books; I try to read a book a day, visiting different countries to see all of their beauty whilst also enjoying the culture/food, and I also speak Chinese mandarin fluently.
