Sandra Ung, Peter Koo and Community Board Leaders Join Borough President Richards as Queens Borough Hall Dedicated as One Claire ShulmanWay
FLUSHING, N.Y. —
On April 26th, Borough President Richards stood alongside community board leaders and the family of Claire Schulman to dedicate Queens Borough Hall as One Claire Shulman Way.
Claire Shulman was Queens Borough President from 1986 through 2002, the first woman to ever hold the position. A lifelong New Yorker, she spent nearly her entire life in public service. Claire paved the path for many women entering public service, and was a fierce advocate for Queens residents.
Throughout her tenure, she helped secure funding for the Queens Hospital Center and fought tirelessly for more school places for children. She was also a champion of our local cultural institutions, including Queens Museum of Art, the Museum of the Moving Image and Flushing Town Hall.
Sandra Ung said, "Claire's passing was felt by everyone in Queens - her legacy can be seen in everything from our parks to local nonprofits to hospitals. She was also a fierce support of more women running for office, and opened the door for an entire generation of women elected officials. She will be sorely missed, but I am glad that her name will now be seen by all who enter the doors of Borough Hall."
Claire Shulman passed away on August 16th, 2020.
